The best wines, no boring scores
When discussing Spanish white wines, particularly Verdejo, it’s impossible not to mention Cuatro Rayas. This winery cooperative has become a benchmark for the Rueda appellation. Founded in 1935, the winery boasts a long tradition and an impressive pedigree.
Today, Cuatro Rayas unites over 300 winegrowers who work collaboratively to highlight the region, its indigenous grapes, and its invaluable legacy of vineyards, many of which are centuries old. The true strength of Cuatro Rayas lies in its ability to elevate Verdejo, the emblematic grape of Rueda, while also excelling with varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and intriguing blends that showcase surprising versatility. From fresh, aromatic wines to more complex, structured offerings crafted from historic vineyards, Cuatro Rayas demonstrates the diverse possibilities of a top cooperative.
Located in Castilla y León, Rueda is synonymous with fresh, aromatic, and personality-rich white wines. It is here, in the calcareous and sandy soils, that Verdejo, the region’s native and iconic variety, thrives. The continental climate, characterized by cold winters and long, hot summers with significant temperature variation between day and night, provides ideal conditions for producing grapes with excellent aromatic complexity and acidity. The well-draining, gravel-rich soils further enhance the depth of the wines.
In addition to Verdejo, other varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Viura blends, and even sparkling wines are produced. Nevertheless, Verdejo remains the undisputed king, capable of producing wines that range from youthful, vibrant interpretations to more complex, oak-aged versions.
Viñedos Centenarios Edición Limitada Longverdejo 2021 by Cuatro Rayas
I purchased this bottle almost by chance as part of an order from Decantalo, with modest expectations. As someone not well-versed in Spanish whites, my curiosity was piqued, especially given its low price: only €14.90.
The Viñedos Centenarios Edición Limitada Longverdejo 2021 was paired with a dish of rice, chicken, and vegetables. In the glass, it presents a lovely golden yellow hue, while the nose reveals notes of orange, melted butter, and white flowers
This is an intriguing white wine that deviates from the trend of razor-sharp acidity. After an enticing and unusual nose, the wine unfolds with a silky body and a depth reminiscent of certain French Viogniers. Its structure and buttery palate are shaped by oak aging, while the medium acidity emerges in almost tactile vibrations towards the end of the sip. The finish surprises with a bitter mandarin note that cleanses the palate.
Although the label states an alcohol content of just 12.5%, it feels more potent or slightly unbalanced. I greatly appreciated the creaminess and richness of this confident, solid wine. There is also good fruit concentration. Verdejo might be a grape to watch in the future.
Full-Bodied Whites with Moderate Acidity
Early in my wine journey, I was drawn to wines like Collio Sauvignon Blancs, with their intense, almost explosive aromas and sharp acidity that left you craving another sip. I gravitated toward aromatic and ultra-fresh whites, much like today’s popular styles—think vibrant and direct Galician Albariños.
Wines like this Longverdejo or the Viogniers I’ve tasted in Maremma don’t rely solely on explosive aromatics. Instead, they often balance more subdued aromas with fuller body, a polyphenolic structure, and a more complex texture. These are wines that demand a different kind of attention—less immediate, more reflective—which aligns with what I’m seeking at this stage of my journey.
A Spanish white wine also more impressive is the Gran Vino Albariño by Pazo de Barrantes.
